Schools are mandated to meet certain metrics where test performance is more important than thinking or even learning. This puts unnecessary stress on teachers and on students and destroys the love of learning for its own sake.
Great article. That is basically the thought process I used to decide to focus on questions in my newsletter. We rarely pause, but to ask a question, you do need to slow down a bit.
I saw this play out over and over again in my 20 years in higher education. I remember one student in my office completely anxiety stricken over a holistic class, which wasn’t known to be one of the more rigorous gen ed courses, because her professor didn’t tell her exactly what was going to be on the test.
When I asked if she had guided notes she said yes (that is a whole other issue related to critical thinking - all the guided notes that I'm not even going to get into here). She went on to say that the instructor didn't tell them exactly what they needed to know on the test from those guided notes. I just remember sitting there speechless 😶
